Why Is Taking Pictures Important
Photography is funny. It seems that everyone has a camera and loves snapping a quick shot, but when it comes to having photos professionally taken, everyone asks why taking pictures is important. Although there are a litany of reasons why taking pictures is important, these are a few reasons why we personally love being behind the lens to create those beautiful memories.
Here is how we fell in love with a creative process and decided it would be our craft.
We’ll start with Brittany:
One Christmas when asked for present ideas, Brittany decided that a camera was all she wanted. She received a Canon Rebel with two lenses, and immediately proceeded to make Amanda pose for an entire impromptu photoshoot at the beach while on vacation.
Over the course of the next few years, Brittany started following photographers on social media, and had quite the realization. She found her career - wedding photographer.
As time went on, she started to find classes to take. Some were online, others were from her alma mater. Ultimately, like most things in this life, there was a large amount of trial and error. From mistakes we learn things that we should do differently, and that has built beautiful, creative photographs.
Photography has also given Brittany the skills to pose and talk to people, which is not something that is always easy. (she’s introverted afterall). As her best friend, she shines the brightest when she is behind that camera though. She will make sure to capture you in the best and most beautiful lighting, which will surprise you. It’s one of her favorite things, proving to people that they actually are photogenic.
As for me:
I honestly remember getting film cameras out and loading the film when I was little. I would use up all the film as fast as possible and then make my parents take me to the local 1-hour photo center where they would process and print all my images into 4 x 6 photos. It was exhilarating. The photos were not the best, but I loved creating and having fun.
When point and shoot cameras came onto the market I was given a hot pink one for my year abroad, which came in handy. I was able to take all the photographs I wanted to with the touch of a button, and I took so many photos of my time in Germany. Some of which my host family hated, like a photo of a drawer full of different ketchups. To be fair, I had never even heard of some of the flavors… curry ketchup anyone?
Over time, I also took a class for photography during college and fell back in love with film and video. I learned to develop and produce art which I quickly fell in love with doing all over again.
Here is what we love about photography and why we think it is important!
1. People Are Photogenic
As previously mentioned, Brittany loves showing people just how photogenic they really are, even if they are a bit afraid of the camera. She has an incredibly soft, yet direct way of making sure that she gets your best side and truly magical images. Everyone should be seen through her lens.
2. Capturing sweet moments that we can’t relive.
Have you ever heard that babies don’t keep? They may not, but photos do. Photos are such a beautiful way to be able to have all the little moments captured for everyone to see and to remember different phases of life that are here and then gone.
One of Brittany’s favorites are her nephew’s newborn photos she was able to do from when he was two weeks old. There will never be another point in time where he is two weeks old again, but for a moment they are stopped and able to be revisited whenever anyone in her family wants.
Another is Brittany’s best friend’s elopement. (I could have said my elopement, but that feels way less cool). When I look at those photos, I am reminded of everyone jumping together to make marrying my partner the most magical moment of my life.
There is something about the feeling you get whenever you are looking at these big moments in life: newborn photos, weddings, engagements, elopements and so many more. It’s a feeling of gratitude and love for that moment in time. A gratitude for the person behind the camera for capturing such a beautiful moment, and for the person or people in the photo.
I once did a shoot that makes me swoon to this day, where I spent the day with a family capturing moments from big to small and mundane so that even the littlest moments were remembered. Those are the ones I am terrified to forget. The mediocre things that I tend to forget to be grateful I have. We called these a day in the life photo sessions.
3. The expression of creativity.
Something that I love about photography is learning to push my skills and challenge myself to learn new ways of capturing an image. It is the true beauty of photography where light and shadows create differences that are so minute. It is paying attention to people and learning how to help ignite their creativity and inspire them to do more.
