Creative Cakes: Farmhouse Cakes
It’s the beginning of the month, and with that comes the Vendor Spotlight! We are so excited to bring you another vendor out of Bloomington, Indiana – Enter the chat, Alison, Owner of Farmhouse Cakes.
Farmhouse Cakes, LLC was born from a long desired, new found motherhood for owner, operator Alison Ballman. Sentimentality and determination are at the heart of Alison's desire to create something special for her children. When Alison’s oldest daughter turned one, Alison created her signature flavor, The Braspberry, which has held the most popular flavor spot on their menu since its creation.
From birthday to smash cakes, wedding cakes to a wide variety of dessert options like cookie dough, cake pops, cookies and macarons the offerings are seemingly endless at Farmhouse Cakes. We were able to taste the cake featured in this blog, which we definitely enjoyed for an after lunch treat.
A fun little fact, and point of pride for Alison is that Farmhouse Cakes is the first legal operating home bakery in Monroe County, under the Indiana Cottage Food Laws. It has paved the way for many women in her community to grow their entrepreneurial spirit while still fulfilling their first role of being full-time stay-at-home mothers.
When we sat down with Alison, she answered all of our wedding cake questions.
What do you hope for the future of Farmhouse Cakes?
My hopes over the next few years is that Farmhouse Cakes grows in the wedding industry as my children get older and I am able to take on more wedding clients. My passion lies with wedding cakes and pallette knife painting! I just love, love!
When it comes to weddings specifically, here are Alison’s hot takes based on years of experience!
What is the most popular wedding cake flavor and style?
White is still classic and will never go out of style! Cakes with textures and pops of florals make these ever-so-popular wedding cakes stand out today!
What trends are you seeing for 2025?
Ditch those individual sweetheart cakes and go for the bold multi-tiered wedding cake! Covid created the popular single cakes and tiny tiers for couples to share, but in 2025 the small cakes are quickly losing popularity and the big show-stoppers are back on top!
What are your favorite trends right now?
COLOR. [You should] always [add] bold color and pallete knife florals on multi-tiered cakes. My all time favorite cakes were featured on the cover and in the styled shoot section of Wedding Day Magazine.
What is the best way to handle the top tier of wedding cake?
Call me old fashioned, but I love traditions. If it is something my grandma did, then heck yes let's do it and keep these traditions alive. Who cares if you forget to pull it out of the freezer and it is rock hard for hours, I bet you will create core memories on your first anniversary just by the act of sitting down together and reminiscing on your wedding day.
What should couples keep in mind?
If design is important to you, make sure you find an artist with a style you love and experience in the techniques you are looking for.
