Is a Mini Photo Session for Me?

Is a Mini Photo Session for Me?

What is a Mini Photo Session?

A mini photo session, or mini for short, is exactly what it sounds like, a short photo session. A mini photo session usually lasts between 15-30 minutes and photographers usually promise between 10-15 photos from each session. Because these are smaller sessions, they’re usually a less expensive option for professional photos that give you a small range of photos.

Because there is a shorter time frame, mini sessions don’t allow for time for outfit or location changes. Mini sessions take place in one smaller location that is predetermined by your photographer, for example, a specific field of flowers within a park. In thirty minutes, you don’t have time to walk through the entire park for a variety of locations. Your photographer will usually pick a location with the best lighting that offers a beautiful background based on the time of day your session is at. Ultimately, you want to spend as much time as possible focusing on taking photos, not trying to find the best location. Your photographer will scout locations ahead of time to make sure you get the best place.

Michelle and I love offering mini sessions because it gives us the opportunity to meet and interact with so many people and celebrate all of their special occasions!

So What Types of Pictures Do You Take at a Mini Photo Session?

The great thing about minis, and part of what makes them so fun to shoot as a photographer, is that minis can be for literally anything!

Just because photos?

We love those!

Need to update your family photos?

You can celebrate anything with a mini photo session, or nothing at all. You don’t have to have a reason to book a mini session other than you wanted to!

What Would You NOT Suggest Using a Mini Photo Session for?

As photographers, we will celebrate anything, anywhere, however, there are some events that we recommend longer sessions for so that you can have more time to celebrate your moment and have an abundance of photos to choose from later.

Engagements

You can absolutely celebrate a recent engagement with a mini session, however, when it comes to actual engagement photos, we recommend a full session. Our engagement sessions are two hours each, allowing for multiple outfits and several locations within a park or venue.

Newborns

Newborn photos would be very difficult to do during a mini session for a few reasons. First of all, newborns don’t know that they’re having their pictures taken, so they don’t always cooperate, which means that you may not get the shots you’re wanting in a short session. Newborn photos also frequently involve props that the photographer might not have with them, like swaddles, baskets, etc. so you may not get the shots you want.

This does not mean that if you have a newborn, you shouldn’t book a mini session. You can definitely get some beautiful photos from them, especially if you’re just looking to update family photos and have newborn photos scheduled in addition to the mini session.

Weddings

A wedding or elopement can absolutely not be celebrated in a 30 minute mini photo session. Just a ceremony is at least 30 minutes and you’ll want to capture so many other memories that there’s just no way!
