Pup & Cup Cakery
At the beginning of the year, Brittany and I sat down to figure out how we could help impact the wedding vendor industry. Specifically, we have a dream to help new and upcoming vendors who are trying to break into the wedding scene, similarly to us. That is where the idea for a monthly vendor spotlight came from, and this month we have a very special guest, Sarah, whom you may have seen around the blog a time or too.
Are you in need of a local, organic baker? Do you also love dogs? We have a baker for you.
Welcome to the chat, Sarah, 22 year-old Baker and Owner of Pup & Cup Cakery. Pup & Cup Cakery serves baked goods to humans and tasty treats to their best friends. (Don’t worry. I won’t feed Brittany any dog treats. I was talking about those four-legged furry best friends). Sarah has had a passion and talent for baking from an early age, and knew that she wanted to own a bakery. Aside from baking, Sarah enjoys reading, swimming, and spending time with her close-knit family. Her biggest joy in life though? Lena, her German Shepherd mix.
After adopting Lena, Sarah quickly realized that Lena has dietary restrictions and allergies, making her special needs. Sarah quickly saw the need for healthy treat options and added some of Lena’s favorites to her menu. It’s clear that Lena has the best job around being the official taste-tester for all Pup & Cup Cakery’s dog treats. Sarah thinks up the recipes and Lena makes sure they are paw-fect for other pups with allergies. It’s a win-win!
As with many ideas, Sarah’s dream bakery started with the idea that would allow dogs on the patio. Over time, the dog friendly patio changed to a dog-friendly store front, allowing dogs to have a separate area inside to play while their human companion enjoyed baked treats. It wasn’t until after Sarah adopted Lena that dogs went from having a passive role in the business to being front and center. Pup & Cup Cakery provides human baked goods with only natural and organic ingredients. She has well-researched treats for dogs using only minimally processed human grade foods.
As far as offerings go, where can our community expect to find creations by Pup & Cup Cakery?
From birthdays and family gatherings to weddings and special events, Sarah offers fun creations. Her menu includes custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies and brownies for her human clientele. Custom orders for specialty items like cream puffs and macarons are also quite common. If you have an event or an idea she’s the gal for you.
Pup & Cup Cakery also provides wholesale baked goods for coffee shops and businesses. The menu includes different flavors of muffins, loaves, scones, and cinnamon rolls (my personal favorite). You can find her products at Coffee at the Crossing and The Groovy Cat Cafe.
What makes Pup & Cup Cakery different from other bakeries?
The two main differences between me and other bakeries is that I only use natural and organic ingredients even in the dog treats and I include a wide range of dog treats that is almost as extensive as my baked goods for people, which I personally have never seen anywhere else.
How are you looking to grow your business over the next few years?
Currently I am a back kitchen bakery, meaning I don’t have a storefront just yet. Within the next two years I plan on opening my first full-service location, allowing me the opportunity and capacity for more custom events.
What is your favorite wedding dessert to make and why?
My favorites to make are wedding cupcakes. I think that cupcakes are more fun than traditional wedding cakes because each cupcake can be a little different while still tying into the overall theme of the wedding. I also find they tend to taste better to most people. Some people don’t like the taste of fondant, which is a traditional wedding cake decoration. Cupcakes are also more creative and versatile for clients wanting multiple flavors.
How to Include Pets in Your Wedding
As a pet-friendly business, what are some creative ways to incorporate pets into your wedding if they can’t physically be there?
While there are many ways to do this, my personal favorite that I have seen is to incorporate the pets into the wedding cake. It is a small section of the cake, but a fondant replica of your pet can be placed in between the decorations on the cake. Not only does this help to blend it into the wedding, but it is also memorable since the cake is such a large part of the wedding. Customized cookies are also a cute way to make your pets part of the big day if they can’t be with you physically.
If you are wanting a more pet-friendly way to incorporate them, wedding themed dog treats for guests to take home is a good option. You could even have a thank-you note from your pet to the guests’ pets.
